Neutral water has a pH of 7. This means that H3O+ ions have the same concentration as OH- ions.

Generally when you add an acid to water you increase the H3O+ion concentration and decrease the OH-ion concentration.

When you add a base to water the reverse happens.

Question by Chris M: Is alkaline or ionized water consumption with chemotherapy a significant health risk?
I know my grammar sucks, but I’m at work. I have an aunt who is in remission from a rare form of lymphoma, and I’m wondering if by buying her the water or the filtration system I’m putting her at more risk than I am helping. She currently is NOT having the chemo, but I’m just wondering if that makes a difference and if anyone has scientific evidence (as opposed to those alkaline water promo websites) to back it up. It sounds great, but you can understand my concern.

It’s sheer quackery.

The best water is distilled. But filtered tap water is nearly as good, unless the water in your area is particularly nasty. Then whole-house reverse-osmosis filtered water would be best.

It is only good depending on what makes it alkaline. You can make water alkaline by adding baking soda to it but baking soda has a lot of sodium.

Recently I tried some drops that are supposed to help with the level of acid in one’s stomach….the drops are added to a glass of water and you take 2 to 3 glasses a day……I don’t know what it does but I heard it can help with a few things….does anyone have any experience taking this?

I don’t think there are any benefits to hexagonal alkaline water.

First, hexagonal alkaline does not make sense: hexagonal (or hexagon) is a shape, and alkaline is a descriptor of acidity (pH). So, from this name, one is to infer that the water, in a high-pH state has a shape? That said, H2O (water) is a 3 atom molecule and can never form a hexagonal shape. Water does not cluster (based on its asymmetrical charge, kinetic energy, atomic vibrations, and diffusion). Alkalinity of water is determined by dissolved ions. Pure water is pH neutral (7), so filtering water tends to even its pH.

Secondly, your body’s pH (or acidity) is regulated through its internal chemistry necessary for cellular function. Therefore, a healthy person would have a pH within a homeostatic range. So, if your body is overly acidic (acidosis), your kidneys have failed, and you die.

Your body is perfectly capable of maintaining its proper pH level itself by drinking simple (potable) tap water.

The only benefit of drinking hexagonal alkaline water is to rid you of excess and unwanted money.

Question by : Does an alkaline water filter really live up to all the hype?
My live-in boyfriend is on this health kick all of a sudden. He has dropped some not-so-subtle hints that I ought to shell out money for one of these filters. Now, I’m all for health and all that, but I’m not about wasting my hard-earned cash on something that may or may not live up to all the hype. We are talking about upwards of 1000 dollars here. And I would just like to know if the expense will be worth it before going through with the purchase.

if you don’t live somewhere with notably acidic water it isnt worth it..
go to your nearby petshop and ask for a fishtank ph test kit, they’re like 10 bucks.. using your tap water and the bromethylene blue included in the kit, test your tap water for alkalinity/acidity. if it is within 6.9 and 7.3 you probably don’t need it.

by definition neutral is pH 7, anything higher (in number) above this figure is deemed alkaline, anything lower is acid.

Baking powder is a mix of acid and bicarbonate which react to produce carbon dioxide. The end result is going to be more or less neutral or the manufacturer is wasting money.

For an alkaline solution, use bicarbonate of soda or washing soda (sodium carbonate), some washing powders are also alkaline, as soap may be.
