Is Kangen water really good for you?

“Alkaline water” is part of a large internet scam. Most water obtained from boreholes is alkaline, I hear of people who spend huge amounts of money for a small bottle of what other people call tap water.
Any acid/alkaline health info you’ve read on the net is in fact total rubbish.

It will keep you hydrated. That’s it. As Dave says, its a scam. No plausibility and no evidence of efficacy. Be skeptical of all alternative medicine claims, they are almost never backed up with robust, peer-reviewed, scientific data. Usually just pseudoscience and anecdotes.

EDIT: Nick – 32 years of baloney…
To neutralise acid in the body (or for anything for that matter?) No, its water snake oil I’m afraid. Like all the “magic water” claims, the alkaline claims are completely nonsensical. Without getting too scientific (because I know you alties struggle here) look at it like this, heavy duty antacids, taken to temporarily neutralise acid, only have very short term, minimal effect. How much effect do you think water that is slightly alkaline is going to have?
Blood pH is about 7.4 managed by metabolic systems in the body. You cannot change your body’s pH by drinking alkaline water. It would require a change to your body’s metabolic processes to alter it. Various kidney problems, diabetes, ingesting posion and various drugs in toxic dose could do this, but not water that is slightly alkaline.
Screwing around with your pH would lead to you being acutely ill and ending up in hospital.

@ Nick Walsh: Frankly, what you said is bollocks.

I hate to pop Dave’s bubble and sully his reputation as an expert, but I have 32 years research in this. Dave is not only dead wrong, but his answers border on irresponsible. Perhaps Dave is one of the thousands of people working for big pharma that are hired specifically to try to stem the tide of knowledge about alkalinity. You see, if alkalinity takes off, then big pharma will lose billions of dollars by people being healthy. Ask Dave why Dr. Otto Warburg won the Nobel Peace prize for his research on alkalinity and its relation to preventing cancer? Maybe Dave thinks he knows more than the Nobel lariat?
Having said that, Alkalinity is vitally important. You only need to go to Pub Med – the US Medical Library to search for alkalinity and disease to see that cancer, for example, will not grow in alkaline environments over 7.4. The body likes an alkaline value of 7.365. When you drink sodas or other acidic foods, you lower your alkalinity. In other words you become more acidic. When this happens, your body take minerals from your bones to buffer the acidity. The result, over the long term, is that you develop osteoarthritis and other related issue related to chronic acidosis.
If you read Glenn Reynolds’ book “An Army of Davids” you will see why big pharma is going to lose the battle ultimately. We the people will communication with each other about our experiences. The stuff that works will win out and it will out of the control of big pharma or they friends in the FDA or Government.
If you search for stories about alkalinity, you will find a ton of data and science to support people’s contentions.
Does that mean there won’t be some idiots out there trying to scam people? Of course not. Where ever there is money, there are idiots trying to get you to give yours to them. All I can say is do your diligence and be ware of posts by people like Dave masquerading as experts. Get all of his credentials. Find out who he works for. Your health is all you have in the end. Guard it agressively.
Nick.
It’s true that there is not a significant amount of research backing the claims of alkaline water and its health benefits, but water ionizers that produce high pH alkaline water has been used in countries like Japan and Korea for about 20 years and have been recognized as medical devices there. The fact of the matter is, the United States FDA wont approve anything natural or alternative that wont make the pharmaceutical companies an extra buck. There will always be skeptics, so I guess its up to you to decide.
