Kangen Water – Unbiased Review
If you are researching and learning about Alkaline or ionized water for better health, you probably have heard about Kangen water. In fact, you may have first heard about alkaline water from one of the Kangen water representatives during a water presentation.

Just what is Kangen water, exactly? The word Kangen is Japanese, which is an era which spanned from 1243-1247, preceeding the Hoji era and after the Ninji era. The term also literally means “return to origin”, so in terms of alkaline water, the term “Kangen water” is actually a marketing term created by its maker and distributor, referring to the beneficial water their water ionizers can produce. The company Enagic is its sole distributor in the Western world.
How is Enagic’s water ionizers different from other ionizers? Without going into details, in a nutshell, they are designed to do the same things, which is electrolyze tap water and separate the water into alkaline (drinkable) and acid (waste or use for cleaning). Now most of these units, when used properly can produce the optimal alkaline water with the main beneficial qualities such as high alkalinity (9-11 pH), strong negative ORP/oxidatino reduction potential (-200mv and below).
With the cost of the top of the line Enagic unit costing around $4000 while the top of the line machine from other brands just under $2000 or so, the natural question to ask is why does the Enagic unit cost more? There are two reasons.
First and obvious, Enagic is an MLM company (I have no biases against good MLM companies), which has to pay its distributors commissions. The margin is over 50% as far as I know, however, that is the advertising, marketing, and distribution cost all rolled into one. For the other companies, while there are no MLM distributors, there are distribution costs, marketing costs and commissions to pay as well.
Second, the Enagic units definitely cost more to make when compared to the other machines because more expensive components are used, and for good reasons. The main component which is just about the most important piece of any ionizer is the Platinum-Coated Titanium plates. Both are precious metal and the more you use, the more it costs. Enagic uses solid, flat plates to achieve the necessary surface area needed to properly electrolyze water. Most other brands cut cost by using smaller plates (less platinum & titanium used) with a mesh design (numerous slits/cut outs) on the plates to create the same surface area. At first this sounds like a great idea, and in the short run, it will produce similar strength of alkaline water.
The drawback of the mesh design is that mesh plates tend to clog up pretty quickly unless the water source is soft water. The fact is, most of the United States has hard water, and some cities REALLY hard water, so without an expensive water softener already installed in the house, the “mesh design” machines will clog up in a matter of months, reducing their available surface area in the ionizing chambers, and producing inferior water. The Enagic machines on the other hand, with clean, smooth plates will remain clean for much longer without repair due to its non-mesh design.
There are other details such as the strength of the power supplies and the coating process used, which puts the Enagic machines ahead of the pack in terms of build quality, and longivity, but for the sake of simplicity I will not get into that for now. Knowing the above, the real question is one you need to evaluate and ask for yourself…is the better machine that will perform without problem for a long time worth the extra money (up to double the cost)? That is something you would have to decide for yourself.
For me, while I’m not a distributor at all for any machines, I can vouch for Enagic nevertheless based on my own research, and experience. I don’t have the money to invest into any ionizers right now (I get it free from my friend’s house), but when I am ready, this is how I would decide.
1)If my new house has soft water built-in without extra cost, I might possibly try a non-Enagic machine (if under $1000) and make sure I do the cleaning process often just to make sure I don’t clog up the “meshed plates” at all, in order to maintain high performance for a long time to come.
2)If my new house does not come with water softener and I don’t plan to install one, then I would go with the smallest Enagic unit (Model Sun US) which only costs about $1200 or so, and while it doesn’t produce the water as quickly as its bigger brother, it seems to work pretty well and I would also be sure to do the cleaning process often just to keep any hard-water buildups on the plates, as even the smoothest surfaces can accumulate hard water build up if uncared for (the smaller Enagic machine has the same type of smooth, flat plates as its big brother, just less of it).

There you have it. Whatever ionizer you use, be sure it is the one that fits your budget, but at the same time, know what type of water source you have, and weigh out the long term cost and maintenance as well. Good luck, and happy hydrating!

The topic is quite hot in the net at the moment. What do you pay the most attention to when choosing what to write ?
Thank you for a very good assessment of these machines. I did not know Kangen had a smaller, less expensive machine.
Is it because the distributors want the big commission from the flagship product?
I think so or they may never have been introduced to the smaller alternative alkilizer machine.
I think you should look at the Tyent USA MMP-7070. For $1,995.00 you can have their genuine Silver brand new upscaled unit or for $2,195.00 you have
a genuine stainless steel unit with the largest mesh surface area in the world (so they claim). It carries a 20 year plate warranty and 10 year warranty. The water in my area is soft.
It would be easier if I was making this a business.
Sincerely
Earl
These kind of articles are always attractive and I am happy to find so many good point here in the post, writing is simply great, thanks for sharing.
Yes, many people like the Tyent flagship model, and really, for about half of the price, if you have soft water, and keep any prefilters working properly, which prolongs the life of the ionizer overall, this just might be one of the best bang for the buck purchase.
I started drinking this water 8.5, I like the fact that in a short time period swalleness has gone down, I have experience energy and is making me nerviouse and a little gittery, I’m also experiencing anciety I feel like my brain is working to much were I feel fatigue. what do you suggest?

I was advise to drink 7.0 not sure if it makes a difference, I have energy to the point I feel jittery, anxiety and fatigue, I like the water I hear good reviews or could I be allergic to something in the water.
I want a kangen brand new the biggest one for under $2000. Can someone contact me?
Here’s a website for a great water ionizer for a third of the SD-501 model….it’s also the only machine APPROVED by the FDA IN THE USA. only Discounted at $1,695.00 regular $1,995.00
For 130 dollars, the major stores sell reverse osmosis water systems which provide 30 gallons a day or more of just pure water. No hooey, no molecules getting and staying smaller (come on now) and no reduced acidity until it hits your tummy. Pay less, drink up and stop imagining things.
@Karl: Most RO systems I’ve purchased under $200 produced less than 2 gallons a day lol. 30 gallons is imagining things. Even more expensive machines can’t drip out RO water that fast. =)
No it’s not about stomach ph/acidity. we’re not trying to neutralize THAT. When drank on empty stomach with no food, the water does not interact with much stomach acid at all, therefore you are getting benefits of having the good stuff in you body.
I’m sure you’ve read that Chem1.com guy supposedly debunks the benefits of alkaline water and calls it snake oil on tap. Well, investigate it further and you’ll see that his arguments are very flawed and attacks the wrong things a lot of the times. This point by point rebuttal explains it in detail:

does the kangen leave in the minerals in the water or does it take everythilng including bad stuff out. Thanks, Annette
If you’re looking to buy a Kangen water system anytime soon, I suggest you ask the sales rep you are talking to a BUNCH of questions. I asked the couple who was trying to sell me one what made the original acidic water from the tap turn into a basic water. They didn’t know and just told me to watch the DVD. How can I buy something from someone when they don’t even know what they’re talking about?
Kangen water leaves the minerals in the water, unlike reverse osmosis machines, while the filter takes out over 98% of the chemicals. The water is basically separated by ionization into alkaline and acidic (there are 2 spigots for the different waters)and actually a range of waters are possible from strong alkaline, “Kangen water,” clean [neutral= pH7], mild acidic and strong acidic. If you want strong alkaline, strong acid also is delivered from the second spigot, the pHs always add up to 14 which comes from the separating of the neutral tap water (pH7)into 2 waters. The Kangen water is very mild and somewhat sweet, not filling. I love it.
The commissions in the Enagic system account for the initial expense but also encourage purchasers to take up becoming distributors as it is very possible to make up the cost of the machine.
Elena, You may be detoxing too fast. I would suggest going to a medium or lighter level alkalinity to slow things down. You may also be experiencing a Herkshimer effect where your body is dealing with the detoxing over load and will get a little worse before it gets better but its Is a positive sign that things are waking up in your body and starting to work. Your body is trying to get the bad stuff out. As for the anxiety I would suggest “upping” your Magnesium. Look into the Magnesium Miracle book by Carolyn Dean. It really had made a significant impact & I rarely experience my Anxiety & panic attacks any more.
Thank you for the excellent tip Dena. Hopefully Elena and anyone else with this issue reads your post and gains better understanding of this whole detox thing.
I bought a Kangen machine Leveluk SD 501 for $4300 thinking it filtered out all the chemicals in the water. I was told it did. Their website expounds on the benefits of filtering out all the chemicals, and the negative effects of all these chemicals in the water. HOWEVER, THIS IS VERY MISLEADING. I found out two years later that my machine did not filter out all these chemicals, only lead and chlorine.
I was upset about this and wrote the president of Enagic a letter. I got no response whatsoever. When I decided to take the matter to court, they contacted me, but were unsympathetic. There website says they listen to their customers. They do not.
I lost my case because Enagic found on ONE of their company pamphlets in very small writing some info that the filter took care of only chlorine and lead. There was one very tiny mention of this. All the other info indicated I was getting the purest water available. To me this is out-and-out fraud. No one told me this when I bought the machine. They did tell me this was the “best and purest water in the world.” Yes, they did.
I asked the judge why he thought Enagic put this info about filtering out all the chemicals in water, the virtues of that, when in fact the expensive machine I bought did not do that. He said, “Because they want your money.” His exact words. Still he decided against me.
This company clearly lacks integrity. Avoid them.
Try it and see what it can do. We for the rest had experienced amazing things for our health for my family. I believe if at first you succed don’t try stupid chances.
Opposite osmosis water filtration are widely-used … Are used to free plain tap water associated with pollutants although normal water ionizers are suppose to help to make your current mineral water alkaline…The best alkaline water filter
