I find Peat Moss, Driftwood and the use of RO water are much better alternatives then any types of chemical direct treatments. The advantages you get with use of more natural products like the Moss wood and RO, is that you effect change slowly over time, and reduce the issues of stress and shock of a more rapid change chemical fixes usually produce.
I would also recommend you test your tap water checking specifically the GH and KH readings. This is likely the real issue.
In a GROSS generalization: Acid water tends to be WITHOUT a lot of dissolved matter, Alkaline water tends to be FULL of dissolved matter. So, logic would tell you that in order to make alkaline water acidic you would need to take things OUT of it…
In short, adding things to water to take things out doesn’t work very reliably.
Your best bet is to mix your alkaline water with water that is more neutral in order to get the water that you want…
Why do you feel the need to lower alkalinity? More alkaline water is more stable, so unless your alkalinity is REALLY HIGH, or your fish REQUIRE acid water, I really wouldn’t worry about it.
